A fire training day held at Barham near the NSW Victorian border will help prepare Forests NSW Western Region fire fighters for a challenging fire season.

Forests NSW district manager, Andrew McCurdy, said the training day on Tuesday 13 November in Little Forest focussed on fire fighter and community safety and asset protection.

“With good rains earlier in the year and subsequent growth, this fire season has the potential to be very challenging,” he said.

Forests NSW fire training coordinator, Cameron Wade, said the training went well with approximately 10 fire fighters from Deniliquin and Narrandera participating in a variety of fire scenarios.

“As one of the four fire authorities in the State, Forests NSW needs to ensure its fire fighters are well prepared for the coming season,” Mr Wade said.

“We have designed training scenarios to test skills in command and control, first aid and survival, communications and working with other agencies.”

He said no fires were lit on the day.

“The sessions are part of continual training Forests NSW employees undertake throughout the year in preparation for the fire season,” Mr Wade said.
