Nominations are now open for the inaugural NSW Organic Pioneers Award aimed at recognising innovation and achievement in the rapidly growing organic industry.

“Applications for this prestigious award are open to candidates across the whole spectrum of the organic Industry,” NSW Department of Primary Industries Organic Farming Liaison Officer Robyn Neeson said.

“Individuals who practice, promote or produce organic food or products and who have contributed to the development and improvement of the organic industry should apply.

“Nominees can have a background in organic farming, research or marketing, or another area of the industry.”

Entry is free and applications for the Award close on 1 June 2012.

Ms Neeson said the inaugural NSW Organic Pioneers Award is another example of the coming of age of the growing organic industry.

“Consumer interest in organic food is at an all-time-high and local organic farmers are growing rapidly to meet the demand.

“From organic eggs, fruit, milk, meat and wine, and even essential oils for cosmetics, consumers are embracing organics.”

Ms Neeson said this award will be part of the effort to help promote the principles and benefits of organic food and farming systems, increase awareness of sustainable farming practices, and highlight the achievements of the NSW organic industry.

The NSW organic industry in conjunction with NSW Department of Primary Industries are organising the NSW Organic Pioneers Award.

The Award is supported by key organic organisations including the Organic Federation of Australia, the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia and the Biological Farmers of Australia; key organic certifiers, Australian Certified Organic, NASAA Certified Organic and the Organic Food Chain; as well as NSW regional food groups such as the Sapphire Coast Producers Association.

The presentation of the Award will be held to coincide with Sydney’s SUSTAIN Expo (formerly the Organic Expo and Green Show) at Moore Park on July 20-22.

A panel of independent judges will assess submissions in the fields of sustainable organic management, personnel management, marketing and food security.

The winner will get a travel bursary to the value of $6,000 to investigate organic enterprises or research facilities of their choosing (eg, Rodale Institute in the US or Elm Farm Research Station in the UK).
