Riverina residents should expect to see NSW Department of Primary Industries’ (NSW DPI) biosecurity officers out and about over the next few weeks as part of the 2012 Queensland fruit fly suppression program.

NSW DPI Regulatory Officer, Daryl Cooper, said NSW DPI biosecurity officers are replacing some 20,000 fruit fly control blocks in Leeton, Narrandera, Griffith, Hillston and Deniliquin.

"The control blocks were first installed in 2011 and now need to be replaced to ensure their ongoing effectiveness,"
Mr Cooper said.

"The control blocks are impregnated with a small amount of insecticide and pheromones and work by attracting and eliminating the male fruit fly and disrupting the breeding cycle.

"The operation is due to commence on the week of the 10th September and will run for around four weeks.

"NSW DPI is appealing to residents to support the fruit fly control team with its work."

NSW DPI provides ongoing fruit fly support to industry, including targeted fruit fly surveillance, market access negotiations, certification, technical advice and broader fruit fly management research.
