The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is assisting animal welfare agencies in the investigation of claims of animal mistreatment at a piggery in the southern tablelands of NSW.

The DPI is acting on information received yesterday about the alleged mistreatment of pigs and illegal trade.

The DPI takes the issue of animal welfare very seriously and is currently assisting Animal Welfare League and the RSPCA to undertake an investigation.

Animal health and welfare representatives visited the premises this afternoon.

Investigations are ongoing.

The welfare of animals in NSW is protected under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTA) 1979 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation which are administered by the DPI and enforced by NSW Police, RSPCA and Animal Welfare League.

Under POCTA fines of up to $110,000 or two years imprisonment apply for acts of aggravated acts of cruelty to animals.
