The NSW Government said the new plan of management for Bidjigal Reserve in Sydney’s North West would steer the future management of the reserve for the next decade and beyond.

Crown Lands General Manager Graham Harding said the plan balanced stronger environmental protection measures with the importance of the reserve for recreation.

“Bidjigal Reserve is a valuable natural asset for the people of New South Wales - incorporating 186 hectares of high quality bushland along Darling Mills Creek and its tributaries in the Hills district,” Mr Harding said.

“The Reserve is a calm, green oasis in the centre of Sydney’s thriving north west.

“The plan of management provides a strategic direction for the management of the Reserve – setting out the need to protect and preserve its unique environmental qualities and indigenous heritage, whilst at the same time accommodating a number of recreational pursuits,” he said.

Mr Harding said the plan acknowledges the challenges and threats to the reserve, including sustainable use, public safety, weed infestation, bushfire, vandalism and feral animals.

But said it also sets out a broad strategy to better harness the resources, skills and community support to affect better management outcomes for the reserve,’

“Critical to the plan are the key actions to be undertaken, each ranked according to its level of priority,” Mr Harding said.

“The action plan will help guide the Trust in its management responsibilities - prioritising work, liaising with key stakeholders, and steering negotiations around the appropriate sustainable use of the reserve.”

Mr Harding said the Bidjigal Reserve Plan of Management embodied the overarching principles and challenges of Crown Land management – providing a reasoned framework that balances environmental, cultural, and recreational needs.

“I would like to thank Trust Members past and present for the tireless effort as stewards of this reserve,” Mr Harding said.

“The plan is a credit to them, and a vote of confidence in the future of the Reserve.
