The Department of Primary Industries has called on any members of the public interested in joining the Lake Illawarra Authority (LIA) board to nominate by next Monday.

“The Government  did not proceed with board appointments last year,” said Renata Brooks, Deputy Director General Catchment and Lands, Department of Primary Industries.

“Instead time was taken to consider the achievements of the LIA and the options for continuing the successful work of managing the lake, “ Ms Brooks said.

“Because some time has passed it is only fair to give the community another chance to put their hand up.

“People who nominated last year will still be eligible and will not need to reapply.

“Their applications will be considered alongside those of any new nominations received by next Monday and appointments will be for 12 months.

“The LIA board will be comprised of NSW Government Agency and local council representatives, and members of the community.

“It is expected the board will be named within a matter of weeks.

“The NSW Government recognises that the LIA has achieved significant environmental and recreational improvements to the lake over its 24 years of operation with most of the required remediation work now completed.

“Once a board is selected, a review will be undertaken to assess whether the LIA has achieved its original purpose and to determine the best model for management going forward.

“Consultation with stakeholders and the public will be a part of this process.

“Troy Grant, as Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources, will lead the review of the LIA.”

Further information on submitting an application is available at www.crownland.nsw.gov.au or by telephoning
