Investigations are continuing into alleged mistreatment and illegal trade of pigs at a Murrumbateman facility in the southern tablelands of NSW.

A cross-agency taskforce, consisting of animal health and welfare representatives from Department of Primary Industries, RSPCA NSW, Animal Welfare League, Livestock Health and Pest Authority, NSW Food Authority and NSW Police, has been set up to undertake the investigation and monitor the welfare of the pigs.

The owner of the piggery has been issued with a number of instructions regarding the ongoing management of the facility and welfare of the pigs.

Members of the taskforce returned to the Murrumbateman property yesterday as part of ongoing investigations and to monitor compliance with the issued instructions.

A number of improvements have already been made and the facility will continue to be monitored closely with regular inspections by animal health and welfare officials.

Officials have also visited a second piggery near Young that is linked to the Murrumbateman property.

RSPCA NSW is continuing to review video footage of the alleged mistreatment of pigs and investigations are ongoing.

The welfare of animals in NSW is protected under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTA) 1979 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulation which are administered by the DPI and enforced by RSPCA NSW, Animal Welfare League and NSW Police.

Under POCTA, significant fines or imprisonment apply for acts of aggravated acts of cruelty to animals.
