Updated weed control guide for winter crops now available

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) has released the 2012 edition of the annual publication Weed Control in Winter Crops. 

Hillston district agronomist, Barry Haskins, said free copies of the 112 page book are now available from NSW DPI offices and regional agribusiness stores, and it can be downloaded at the Department’s website for use on computer, smart phone and tablet devices. 

"As in previous years, Weed Control in Winter Crops contains important information on the use of current pre and post emergent herbicides used in all aspects of winter cropping systems,” Mr Haskins said. 

“The publication is authored by an experienced team of district agronomists with assistance from departmental specialists, industry experts and herbicide manufacturers. 

“Refinements in this year’s edition include the addition of extra information requested by growers and advisors, as well as improvements in the ease of use in both hard copy and for the developing tablet and smart phone markets.” 

Mr Haskins said new herbicides included this year include Sakura®, Flight® EC and Valor® 500WG, along with some changes in conditions of use and label extensions for existing herbicides. 

“This year’s publication includes the latest information on herbicide resistance monitoring surveys across Australia, which provides invaluable information to manage herbicide resistance, the largest threat to conservation farming,” he said. 

“Herbicide tolerance tables for each winter crop have been updated, listing herbicide options and application rates for a wide range of weeds. 

“A new table this year lists the physical compatibilities of fungicides and herbicides, which has been added following feedback from farmers and agronomists. 

“We have also revised the tables for plant back of herbicides in fallow and crop use situations to make them easier to use.”
