Farmers and landholders are invited to a field day about biological control for Giant Parramatta Grass (GPG) to be held at Valla on Thursday 20 September.

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Nambucca Council and Nambucca Landcare are presenting the day on Giant Parramatta grass crown rot disease - including a walk through a local trial site with DPI Research Agronomist David Officer.

“Crown rot disease was first seen in the Clarence and Orara valleys where it has significantly reduced the infestation of GPG – a devastating weed,” said DPI agronomist Carol Rose.

“Research at Grafton Primary Industries research station led to the isolation of the crown rot disease, and further work has checked that it does not affect other common grasses in the area.

“Trials were set up along the coast to look at ways to spread the disease and the level of damage done to GPG stands.”

Ms Rose will give a talk on the day about farm hygiene and pasture health to stop weed spread.

Tim Woodward, the Nambucca Weeds Officer will also talk about other invasive weeds including Tropical Soda Apple.

The day is being held at Valla Rural Hall day on Thursday 20 September from 10am till 12.30, with morning tea provided.

To register call Terri Brown at Nambucca Council on 6568 0263.
