Forage Walking and Tasting Trail Promotes Central West’s Fine Food Producers

More than 500 people are expected to eat and drink their way along one of the Central West’s most scenic trails as part of one the headline events for Orange F.O.O.D. Week. 

Forage gets underway this Saturday 21st April with busses picking up hundreds of passengers to take them to their leisurely walk through the Central West food basket. 

NSW Department of Primary Industries, Manager Horticulture Industry Development Murray Spicer said the event allows visitors and locals to make the connection between food and how it’s produced. 

“Forage is a food, wine, walking, learning and tasting event which provides a unique hands-on experience for participants and their tastebuds,” he said. 

“The NSW Department of Primary Industries is proud to support Forage because it’s a great opportunity to promote our fine food and producers in the Central West, and helps visitors and locals establish the important link from the plate back to the paddock. 

“Our staff will play an important role this Saturday by taking the walk along with visitors, to help provide general information about local food and wine production, latest industry developments, sustainability climate issues or services provided by DPI.” 

Forage

• The agritourism trail takes in scenic vineyards and orchards along a gentle 3.5km walk from Borenore to Nashdale. 
• Food stations are conveniently situated around every 500 metres. 
• Some of the local produce includes: seared venison with beetroot risotto; galantine of chicken with prune and pork stuffing, mushroom pie, apple lime and mint sorbet. All food is matched with local wine. 

Mr Spicer said Orange has thriving agricultural industry and a rich history for producing food, where local producers grow almost half the State’s apple crop and the area has a reputation for producing lamb, beef, cherries and wine. 

“Because 2012 is Australian Year of the Farmer this year, Forage gives us a chance to further promote and celebrate the quality agricultural produce that comes from Orange and the Central West,” he said.
