NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI), in partnership with local Indigenous groups, will run a number of fishing workshops for Indigenous youth on the South Coast these April school holidays.

NSW DPI Community Relations Manager, George Mannah, said the workshops will give Indigenous children the opportunity to learn basic fishing skills as well as some broader lessons about life.

“The workshops will cover everything you need to know to be able to get out there and drop in a line,” Mr Mannah said.

“Our expert staff will go through fishing safely, conservation, rules and regulations, rigging and gear, baiting and casting, fish identification and how to clean, gut and prepare a fish.

“Through the workshops we are teaching the next generation about the importance of safe and sustainable fishing.”

Chairman of the Aboriginal Fishing Advisory Council, Danny Chapman, said the fishing workshops form part of a diversionary program for Indigenous youth.

“Aboriginal Affairs, in co-operation with the community, has developed programs that include activities to keep kids busy and occupied, especially during the school holiday period,” Mr Chapman said.

“The workshops not only teach the children fishing skills but also encourage social interaction and provide a great opportunity for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to share their knowledge with the boys and girls.

“Aboriginal people have a rich history of fishing here on the South Coast and our culture survives because of it.

“The workshops also build bridges between the Aboriginal community and NSW DPI.”

Workshops are supported by funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and are free to all participants.

Participants will receive a rod, reel, hat, tackle box, educational material and a Certificate of Achievement recognising the knowledge and experience they have gained on fishing and Aboriginal culture.
