Fishing season kicks off this long weekend

Recreational fishers dusting off their gear for the symbolic start of the recreational fishing season this weekend are advised to make sure their fishing license is current and that they are up to date with the range of fishing rules in place across NSW.

DPI Director of Fisheries Compliance, Glenn Tritton, said a significant increase in fishing activity is expected over the October long weekend as warm weather and increased catches bring recreational fishers out of their winter hibernation.

"It is important that every fisher not only prepares their equipment before heading out this weekend, but also checks that they have a current fishing licence," Mr Tritton said.

"And don’t forget that the licence must be carried when engaged in any method of fishing.

"Fishers also need to ensure they are up to date with bag and size limits, and other restrictions such as area closures and fishing gear limitations.

"DPI fisheries officers will be out on patrol over the long weekend to answer any questions and ensure that fishers are following the rules in place to protect our State’s vital fisheries resources for the benefit of current and future generations."

Mr Tritton urged fishers heading out for the first time this season to be mindful of safety at all times.

"We want recreational fishers to enjoy a great weekend of fishing, while at all times making sure that the safety of themselves and their companions comes first," he said.

"This is especially the case with activities such as rock fishing and boating, particularly when accompanied by children and non-swimmers."

The NSW fishing licence fee can be paid online at www.licence.nsw.gov.au, at most boat and tackle stores, NSW Kmart Stores or by calling 1300 369 365.

Money raised from the recreational fishing licence fee is placed into the NSW Government’s Recreational Fishing Trust and allocated to a range of worthwhile recreational fishing projects.
