Local cattle producers have this month been invited to workshops in Coolah, Cumnock and Dubbo where they can get information on how to supply feeder cattle destined for the high-priced European Union (EU) market.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) livestock officer, Jeff House, said JBS Australia aims to source cattle for its EU accredited feedlots in Narrandera and Caroona.

“The EU market offers premium prices for quality cattle - the workshops will allow local producers to explore their options and learn what is required to supply cattle to the JBS feedlots,” Mr House said.

“Australia first gained access to the EU High Quality Beef (HQB) grainfed market in 2010 and currently Australia, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Uruguay are approved to supply beef into the 48,000 tonne quota HQB grainfed market.”

Topics for discussion will include an outline of what the EU market offers local producers, five easy steps to EU accreditation, breeding for the EU market and the EU auditing process.

Supported by Meat & Livestock Australia’s More Beef from Pastures program, information will be presented by DPI and JBS staff and local producers.

The workshops will run from 9.30 am until 2.30 pm:

  • Tuesday October 23 at the Coolah Bowling Club
  • Wednesday October 24 at the West Dubbo Bowling Club
  • Friday October 26 at the Cumnock Bowling Club

A fee of $20 covers catering which includes lunch and registration is essential by telephoning Tracy Reid at the DPI Forbes office (02) 6850 1900 or by email, jeffrey.house@dpi.nsw.gov.au
