More than 60 representatives of Landcare and Catchment Management Authorities (CMA) from NSW met in the Southern Tablelands this month to discuss the state of land management across the state.

Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources, Troy Grant, opened the first Regional Landcare Facilitators Conference under the NSW Government’s Landcare Support Program.

The Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, also represented the Government at the conference.

The conference was an opportunity to explore opportunities, develop partnerships and to extend the work of Landcare groups across the State.

“The conference was a unique opportunity for regional Landcare facilitators and CMA staff who support Landcare to come together and discuss support strategies for Landcare,” said Renata Brooks, Deputy Director General Catchment and Lands, Department of Primary Industries.

“The Landcare Support Program is aimed at using the knowledge and experience of local communities to increase opportunities for people to look after and protect their own environments.

“It is empowering for communities to be involved in the rehabilitation of their own backyards.

“The achievements of Landcare can be seen through the work of groups such as the Numeralla Landcare Group, which was nominated for a community group award at the NSW Landcare awards last year.”

Chris Cumming from Holbrook Landcare, who sits on the Landcare Support Program Steering Committee, said the conference allowed attendees to grow stronger relationships both within and outside the Landcare community.

The three day Conference was held in Sutton, near the ACT border in the Yass river Valley.
