Mudgee winemaker David Lowe has been named winner of the prestigious 2013 Graham Gregory Award during today’s NSW Wine Awards, which are supported by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

Mr Lowe was recognised for his tireless efforts in promoting the NSW wine industry to consumer markets across Australia and internationally.

Acting Director General of DPI, Michael Bullen, said David is well known for his contribution to the NSW wine industry and is a passionate supporter of organic and sustainable farming practices.

“David has been a champion of the NSW wine industry for more than 30 years and is respected by his peers throughout NSW and Australia as a talented and passionate wine professional,” Mr Bullen said.

“He has worked tirelessly as a wine industry advocate, holding a range of industry positions, including previous President of the NSW Wine Industry Association.

“One of the highlights of his time in this role was the focus on getting NSW wine drinkers to choose local and consume NSW product.

“A range of initiatives were developed including ensuring NSW wines were served exclusively at NSW Parliament House functions and NSW Government agencies and organisations were encouraged to follow suit to support their own State’s producers.

“The growth of the Sydney Cellar Door event under David’s leadership has also generated renewed interest in NSW wine and has resulted in city consumers making the trip to the State’s wine regions to enjoy the cellar door experience.

“The Association has achieved some significant gains in wine sales within NSW for its members in recent years, and this is in no small part due to David’s vision, leadership and commitment to the industry.”

Other industry positions include his current role as Vice President of the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia and President of the Mudgee Wine Grape Growers Association.

David’s Mudgee-based wine business, Lowe Wines, has attracted recognition through a number of industry medals, trophies and awards, including Best Zinfandel at the 2003 International Wine Challenge and the Qantas Cup for the Best Australian Chardonnay.

“David showcases the type of vision and commitment to the NSW wine industry that we like to recognise through the awarding of the Graham Gregory trophy.

The Graham Gregory Award is named after the former NSW Agriculture Deputy Director-General, Graham Gregory, who is regarded as a significant pioneer of the NSW industry.

The NSW wine industry contributes more than $500 million to the economy, and remains a significant player on the national scene, representing around 35 per cent of Australian wine produced.
